Kojima on Mar 14 '07 It's an Aunt Jemima mold. I studied this in my Food and Culture class. In the past, people associated black women with domestic work after seeing Jemima. Corey's design shows that Aunt Jemima is only a mold, not a real person. He wants us to learn that stereotypes should not be made from inaminate objects. This designer is a politician and a genius. He is truly a dieing breed...

Looks more like a piece of chocolate to me. I don't think many would get the Aunt Jemima reference, especially since it doesn't much look like her, just a regular lady.

i would NEVER have thought "Aunt Jemima."
the designs on the clothing look Scandinavian to me, & it reminds me of the antique wooden butter molds from France & Germany. Kojima- you don't think people associated black women with domestic work BEFORE the Aunt Jemima character (or Mammy figures in general) became popular? somehow I doubt that was the begining of the streotype! |

* i leave my designs open to interpretation, and dont usually add too much explanation. i think designs are more interesting when you dont necessarily have the complete story or background. and you arent right or wrong in what an image makes you think of. so if it makes you think of a cookie or if it makes you think of looking beyond social stereotypes ... the main thing is to keep thinking about things, its all good! |
